White sage (Salvia apiana) from the coastal mountains of California is a broad leaf sage which has been long acknowledged for its strong healing and aromatic properties. Its genus name Salvia comes from the Latin root word "salvare" which means "to heal" or "to save". Sage is used in smudging to create a cleansing bath of smoke used to purify and banish negative energies from people, homes, ceremonial and ritual spaces, and ceremonial tools and objects.

It is recommended to smudge with sage on a regular basis (oneself and one's living space) in order to maintain harmony and balance.
